If you are planning a Jodhpur to Jaisalmer tour, here is the short answer. The two cities are about 285 km apart, roughly 5 hours by road. Two days is the minimum for the Golden Fort and one night in a desert camp. Three days is far more relaxed, and four to five days lets you add the Tanot Mata Temple and the Longewala war memorial near the border. The most comfortable way to do it is a private AC taxi from Jodhpur. The best months are October to March.

  • Top experiences: Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Qila), the havelis, a sunset camel safari at Sam Sand Dunes, a night in a desert camp, Tanot Mata and Longewala
  • Distance from Jaisalmer to the dunes: Sam is about 40 km west of the city, around 45 minutes to an hour by car

Suggested Itineraries: 2-Day and 3-Day Options

Both plans start and end in Jodhpur, and can be adjusted to finish in Jaisalmer instead.

2-Day Jodhpur to Jaisalmer Itinerary (1 Night in a Desert Camp)

Day 1: Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, city highlights and Sam Sand Dunes

  1. Leave Jodhpur early, ideally by 6:30 or 7 am. Drive about 285 km (around 5 hours) with a tea break on the way, often around Pokaran.
  2. Reach Jaisalmer by late morning. Visit Jaisalmer Fort and Patwon Ki Haveli, then have lunch in the old city.
  3. Mid-afternoon, drive about 40 km (45 minutes to an hour) to Sam Sand Dunes. If time allows, stop at the abandoned village of Kuldhara on the way.
  4. Go on a sunset camel safari, then enjoy the folk music, Kalbeliya dance and Rajasthani dinner at your camp.

Day 2: Desert sunrise and return to Jodhpur

  1. Wake early for sunrise over the dunes and have breakfast at the camp.
  2. Drive back towards Jaisalmer. If you have time, stop at Gadisar Lake or the Bada Bagh cenotaphs.
  3. Return to Jodhpur (about 285 km, 5 hours plus breaks) and reach by evening.

Our honest take: this plan works, but it is a full two days with around 650 km of driving in total. If you can spare one more day, take the 3-day plan.

3-Day Jodhpur to Jaisalmer Itinerary (Recommended)

The plan we suggest to most families and couples.

Day 1: Jodhpur to Jaisalmer and the Golden City at sunset

  1. Make a relaxed morning start from Jodhpur. The 285 km drive takes around 5 hours with stops.
  2. Check into your Jaisalmer hotel and rest during the hot afternoon hours.
  3. Watch the sunset from Vyas Chhatri or Gadisar Lake, then walk through the local bazaars for mirror-work textiles, leather goods and yellow sandstone souvenirs.

Day 2: Jaisalmer sightseeing and a night at Sam Sand Dunes

  1. Take a guided morning walk through Jaisalmer Fort, one of the few living forts in the world, with homes, Jain temples and royal palaces inside its walls.
  2. Visit Patwon Ki Haveli, Salim Singh Ki Haveli and Nathmal Ki Haveli for their famous sandstone carving.
  3. After lunch, see Bada Bagh, then head to Sam via Kuldhara (about 40 km, 45 minutes to an hour).
  4. Enjoy a sunset camel safari, a cultural evening and dinner, and stay overnight in a Swiss tent.

Day 3: Sunrise on the dunes and drive back to Jodhpur

  1. Watch sunrise in the desert, then have breakfast at the camp.
  2. Drive back to Jodhpur (roughly 325 km from Sam, around 6 hours with breaks) and reach by late afternoon or evening.

Have 4 to 5 Days? Add Tanot Mata and Longewala

With extra time, add a full day to the Indo-Pak border region. Tanot Mata Temple is about 120 km from Jaisalmer and is revered for surviving heavy shelling in the 1971 war. Nearby Longewala was the site of the famous 1971 battle, and its war memorial displays captured tanks and military exhibits. It is an inspiring day out, and safe for families.

That is exactly what our 4N/5D Jaisalmer Tour Package covers. You get Jodhpur and Jaisalmer sightseeing, a night at a Sam desert camp with a camel safari, the Tanot and Longewala excursion, and a private AC car with a driver for all five days. How to Get from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer: Taxi vs Bus vs Train

There is no direct flight between the two cities, so road and rail are the real options.

By Private Taxi (Most Flexible)

A private cab takes about 5 hours and picks you up from your hotel, the airport or the railway station. Its biggest advantage is that the same car stays with you in Jaisalmer. That means you do not have to arrange separate local transport for the fort, Kuldhara, Sam or Tanot. You can also stop when you like, for chai at a dhaba or at Pokaran Fort.

A taxi is the best choice for families, senior citizens, groups and anyone travelling with luggage or camera gear.

By Bus (Budget Option)

RSRTC and private operators run seater and sleeper buses between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. The trip usually takes longer than by car, about 5.5 to 7 hours depending on stops. Buses are the cheapest choice for solo travellers and backpackers. The trade-off is fixed timings, less comfort and separate local transport in Jaisalmer and to the dunes.

By Train (Good for Overnight Travel)

Several trains connect Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, and the journey usually takes about 5 to 6 hours. An overnight train can save you a hotel night, but you still need transport in Jaisalmer and to the dunes. In peak season, book early because seats fill fast.

Our recommendation: if you value time and comfort, or want to add Kuldhara, Sam and the border area, a private taxi is the simplest option. Travels House offers clean AC sedans like the Toyota Etios and Swift Dzire, along with the Toyota Innova and Crysta for families and Tempo Travellers for groups, all with experienced drivers. See our tour packages or contact us for a one-way, round-trip or multi-day taxi quote.

Desert Camp and Safari Options in Jaisalmer

Sam Sand Dunes vs Khuri

  • Sam Sand Dunes: about 40 km west of Jaisalmer. This is the classic choice, with tall dunes, a wide range of camps and lively cultural evenings. It gets busy on peak weekends and holidays.
  • Khuri: a quieter village dune area south-west of Jaisalmer, with a more rustic, low-key feel. It suits travellers who want calm over entertainment.

Types of Desert Camps

  • Swiss tent camps: the most popular option. These are tents with proper beds, electricity and attached bathrooms. Our partner camps at Sam offer clean linen, hot and cold running water, charging points and security.
  • Luxury camps: larger tents, better interiors and a more premium dining and service experience.

A typical Sam camp evening includes a dhol and tilak welcome, tea and snacks, live folk music, Kalbeliya dance, a fire show or bonfire and a Rajasthani buffet dinner, with breakfast the next morning.

Safari and Adventure Activities

  • Camel safari: the signature experience. Ride across the dunes in the late afternoon and stop on a crest to watch the sunset.
  • Jeep safari or dune bashing: a fast, bumpy 4×4 ride over the dunes. It is thrilling, but not ideal for people with back problems, and it is usually an optional extra.
  • Other add-ons: quad biking, and paramotoring or parasailing at some camps, depending on season and operator.

Prefer heritage over a border trip? Our Golden Sand Tour gives more time to Jodhpur and Jaisalmer’s forts and havelis, ending with a night at a Sam dunes camp and a sunset camel safari.

Best Time for a Jodhpur to Jaisalmer Trip

  • October to March (best): pleasant days that suit sightseeing and safaris. December and January nights in the desert get very cold, so pack warm layers. The Jaisalmer Desert Festival usually falls in January or February, and its dates change each year.
  • April to June (summer): very hot, with afternoon temperatures that can cross 45°C. If you must travel, plan sightseeing for early morning and evening only.
  • July to September (monsoon): little rain but humid. The desert looks greener and crowds are thinner. Many desert camps work seasonally, so check availability before you plan a dune night.

Peak dates such as Diwali, Christmas, New Year and long weekends fill up quickly. Book your car and camp a few weeks ahead.

Jodhpur to Jaisalmer Tour Cost: What Affects Your Budget

There is no single fixed price, because cost depends on your dates and choices. These factors shape your budget:

  1. Transport: your choice of vehicle (sedan, Innova or Crysta, or Tempo Traveller), the number of days and the total kilometres, including side trips to Sam, Kuldhara or Tanot. Our published rates start from ₹12/km for a sedan and ₹18 to 22/km for an Innova or Crysta. Your final outstation quote depends on the route and duration.
  2. Desert camp category: standard, Swiss tent or luxury, and whether your dates fall on a weekend or peak holiday.
  3. Hotels: a budget stay, a heritage haveli or a luxury property such as Fort Rajwada.
  4. Season: December, the New Year and festival dates cost more than shoulder months like October or March.
  5. Extras: monument entry and camera fees, jeep safari or dune bashing, lunches, shopping and tips. These are usually not part of a package.

A simple budgeting rule: solo travellers on a tight budget save most with the train or bus and a standard camp. Families and groups of three or more usually get better value from a private car package, because transport, the camel safari and the camp are bundled together and the car cost is shared. Practical Tips for Your Jaisalmer Desert Trip

  • Start early from Jodhpur. Leaving by 7 am gets you to Jaisalmer before the afternoon heat and gives you a full first day.
  • Carry layers in winter. Days can be warm while desert nights drop sharply. A jacket, cap and socks are a must from December to February.
  • Protect yourself from the sun. Pack sunglasses, sunscreen, a scarf or dupatta for dust, and keep water with you on the drive.
  • Wear easy footwear. Slip-ons are best for the fort’s stone lanes and the sand.
  • Carry some cash. Card and UPI work in Jaisalmer city, but signal can be weak around Sam and the border areas.
  • Carry ID for border areas. Keep government ID with you for Tanot and Longewala. Foreign nationals should check current permit rules before planning the border day, and we will advise you when you book.
  • Pair it with Jodhpur. Spend at least a day in the Blue City for Mehrangarh Fort and the old city. Our Jodhpur travel guide has a ready plan.

Two days covers the fort, a camel safari and one camp night, but it is tight. Three days is more comfortable, and four to five days adds Tanot Mata and Longewala.

Can I do a Jaisalmer desert safari from Jodhpur in one day?

Technically yes, but it means about 10 hours of driving and very little time at the dunes. If you only have one day, a desert safari at Osian, about 65 km from Jodhpur, is a far better choice. For Jaisalmer, plan at least one night.

Which is better for a desert camp, Sam or Khuri?

Sam has taller dunes, more camp choices and livelier cultural evenings, which makes it the most popular choice. Khuri is quieter and more rustic. Most first-time visitors enjoy Sam.
